My league mandates a 6-3-2 defense. Can you recommend some material on this
-----------------------------
I have never run a defense like thatI am not sure about any material either I do know this
you have to line up your best linemen and stunt them into gaps
i call it slant, angle, for right or left
and pinch and blood for outside and inside i flip flop my end and, I guess safety for you.....i put my strongest end with my weakest db and make calls strong right or strong left
and guess during the game which side the other team will run to. Many times i put the strong side to the wide side of the field and make them run to the short side if they want to avoid my mash face end
have the safety read the tight end and QB's eyes. See the end out of the corner of your eye and if he blocks come on up and make a play
if the play goes away hold for 2 seconds and watch for bootlegs and reverses.
the end would follow deep as the deepest back in the back field on plays away. He never folds back on goes down the line. Very bad technique there.

Questions about youth football coaching

Q
Do you have anymore plays for a running quarterback and for a goodtailback? I have a running quarterback 5th and 6th grade and love your website. A single wing YEA BABY
It's in my youth football guide
---------------------------
I purchased this guide but did not see many quarterback running plays. Please advise. I would love to run the option.
I would NOT recommend option unless you are 14 and over
my guide is for 13 and under for the most part option to run the option you must complete the snap, make all your blocks, then possibly pitch the ball to the tailback....there are too many ways to screww this up
I have never seen a TRUE option team play small guy football....what they will do is call the play to option or pitch and the QB makes no option
...he has the play called for him
where have you seen this?
what age do you coach?and why do you think this will work?
use the single wing stuff
if you do use an optionI would mid line option and the only option is to hand the ball off to the fullback right up the centers butt or the wb keeps it and trys to turn inside the tackle...in small ball you BETTER have a great line to run this
or oooooPs you look awful
-------------------
I had the same concerns. They are 5th and 6th grade. On your wristband and spreadsheet for the game plays you list a lot of formations and plays. Do you have any of that information?
What I do is call all plays by hand signal..
BUT YES IT IS IN THE BOOK NOW
....the numbers just go around my body like 1 on my head. 2 neck, 3 top of shoulder, 4 armpit, 5 hip, 6 outside knee, 7 inside knee, 8 hand movement between legs......then I makeup crazy thing for formations. wing right is a chicken flopping right arm with hand near chest...motion left is a left hand wiggling in a downward motion.....single wing right is one finger then then wiggle arm motion......of course the first number is the player the second is the hole.....but remember or surely you read...about the no huddle which isl ike the ten play tempo......ten play tempo is set mostly for the running backs and to make sure they understand game SPEED.....the must hit the holes and make the hand offs in the quickest of motions......less than 2 seconds
and the back must be past the line then run 20 yards further...but you must
instill a no huddle play set each week.....4-5 plays they run without asking.....and when you run plays you have your plays sequenced before the game in sets of ten.....before each game each player should know before youeven call it what the next play will be based on the way you called thes ets during that week.....remember in small ball it is highly unlikely any coach can get his players to understand and anticipate plays even if you do it the same way each time........but change up the 4-5 play no huddle and the ten play sequence each week......

Good afternoon once again coach Majors. Here's my e-mail address, my youth e-mail addresses is under construction. If you like you can still try to e-mail me at . Thanks, for your support. Frank T. Johnson Jr. Athletic Director Centra Texas Youth Sports Knights
It's like I said on the phone......I think to map out an entire clinic is a tough job especially if you don't use pads....I always thought anything without out pads was just that anything or nothing...I would have a great warm up with team chants that takes about 15-20 minutes.....run team drills 10yrds form running, carrioca, slide step cross over, back peddle, high knees, then 3 man barrel rolls finishing in the same manner except use 20 yard sprints then back in line.....that takes 30-50 minutes easy.. break.......form drills for db and lbs line work stance and 3 rushing swim rip bull, techniques. offense pass pro and run blocking techniques using my pass pro drill, then teach qb's a receivers stuff......split this section into two fazes offense then defense so each player can work on both sides of the ball.....then finish with team flag
-----------------------
Bo Hello, I emailed you a few times before. I purchased your guide to coaching, great stuff.
We just completed our 1st week of conditioning, we worked them hard, we have 35 good kids, I am coaching the o and d lines. We have really good size, good speed, and smart kids, I could use some help. We go full contact on Thursday, please give me your thoughts on how to pick the best kids for the lines, what drills to do in pads, also, what type of split do you use, and technique, I need all kind of help! I need to develop a stud line so wecan run the ball, and play d on the other side. Congrats on your 03 season.
-------------------
I always used one foot...MINE...as a guide.....Some coaches like to get the player to hold arms out and hold touch or whatever with the hands arms or however it looks good. Guards always line up toe to center heal to keep folks from lining up offside....I like the total line techniques where you line them all up and have a bunch off rowdys try to make it through the line going to the right or left all at once......I stand on the defensive side and call the huddle and call rip right or left or swim right or left....or bull rush....it's easy to find slack offensive linemen here and on the one on one pass pro....this is a great teaching tool especially for holding....it is easy to teach how to block and not hold in this drill.....most off the time I try to block down and kick out block at the point of attack....so I teach double team blocking and kick out blocking to end tackles and backs....4 seconds and the play is overif you can block for 4 seconds you win
--------------------------------
This is my 3rd year coaching pop warner, my first as head defensvise coach. We have a very talented group of boys that are eager to play. I don't wantto be the reason we don't make it to the play-offs because of picking the wrong defense. I like the 4-3 defense, but I am not really sure how towork it, what do you suggest. Do you have a diagram that you can send me. I only want to run 3 to 4 defenses this year 5-2, 4-3, a blitz defense and a zone defense. Please help Thanks,
-----------------
I WOULD NOT use anything 4 front
I would use50-60-70 fronts
rotate to your strong callsmake your strongest end a weak or quick end
make your strongest CB your strong Side cb
change your fronts regular likemix in some outside x stuntsbut FOR GET FORTY
that was designed for passing offenses in the pros
it has dribbled down over the years
but not far enough to match your team
-----------------
I like to keep pressure on the QB and blitzing is the only way to do that. What about shooting the DE's? I teach them to contain and react, however 3downs are good downs to put added pressure on the QB, would you agree?
Amost of the time i tell the ends to run deep as the deepest back and hit someone....i dont care who and cause a train wreck.....they also must read
the end thoughif the end blocks down then stay at home
if the end trys to block him throw him away and run for the deepest back
---------------
Last night I put together the 5-2 we looked okay, still alot of work to do!
I blitzed the LB'ers through the outside of the DT's. I like the way theywhere in the back field however, the offense was running pitchouts so I thought to blitz the LB's to the outside of the DE's for show to see what happens, maybe tonight! What do you think
-------------
I don't like shooting gaps with linebackers unless it's a play side automatic read and run.....what if they run a counter or reverse or even worse throw a pop pass back side of play action......your leaving a lot on the table
IF you feel like you need to make them soot gaps....make sure the backside linebacker or play away backer make his first forward step to play side then holds for 2 seconds reading the backside tight end and look for counters, boots, tight end pop passes and the like....the middle backer should never shoot a gap....in fact he should read and react to plays watch the qb's eyes shoot only playside backers.....who's gonna tackle the guy if he slips through one of the gapping gaps you surely will have shooting linebackers
the free safety he's supposed to be bored to tears

Yea, I was on your site, I looked at your 5-3 diagram, for some reason Icould not view your 60-70's. Oh yea, what about goalline defense? What do you run in a goal line situation?
--------------
depends 60-70 usually I pull the corners on if the offense in tight

I am a youth football coach in my second year in Northern PA. We have taken over a program that was a total disaster. No knowledge, no understanding and alot of mistakes, leading of course to alot of losses. We are trying to fix the problem, and have made good ground. However I am coaching a bunch of 9-10 year old kids and I am having trouble with defense. We run a 7 man front, 2 middle linebackers, and 2 corners. We cant stop the sweeps one bit. Nothing gets through the middle, but sweeps kills us. No matter how many times I tell my ends to stay at home , and tell my corners to read the ball, they get around. Please help me with some suggestions I could go with. I want some wins for this team, and they are so close.
-----------------------
not a book buyer Valley Bulldogs
i would say buy my online book
im a defense guy ends cannot be made rsponsible for sweeps
its the corners job to turn them in and when they do expect your free safety to make the play
sounds to me like you dont have one so ooooooop
sno defense
your best player and tackler should be your free safety who plays 8-12 yards deep, middle of formation.your second and third are your corners
make corners play at least 6-12 yards outside the last man on the line of scrimmage and 4 yards deep taking their first two steps backor inside eye of a wide out and at least 5-7 yards deep. first tow steps are back
forget the pass for the most part unless these 10 year olds can pass, most cant and you ll know it the they can and thats another question entirely. and oooops........you much teach the pursuit drill............... buy the book

Online Book Buyer 2 quick questions for you
Hi -Questions for you, if you don't mind.In a 52 defense, would trips change the zone coverage in any way?In general, does blitzing against trips while in a 52 make any sense? Thanks in advance!your in another category than I'm fine tuned fortrips is generally an advanced 14 year old range football set.I hate it happened but this is why the 4-3 was inventedso a defense could get another back in the gamethese three wide and 4 wide no back sets.in college coach boles played the zone in a 5-2 but, would man up a linebacker ME, on the fullback andmanned up the strong safety on the third receiver, whoever we decided he wasthen we would run a 2 deep zone over the top with the free safety and weak corner back.with the "outside-linebacker or end" playing the flat and the strong corner playing the other flat.the weak "weak side inside linebacker" played middle curl zone which would be the weak point in this set up.if u blitz give up the third receiver. and hope for a sack by the strong safety.out of my category question...8-13 year oldshope this helpsQuoting BookBuyer@comcast.net:I am coaching a ten year old football team and just purchased your onlinebook, which is fantastic by the way. I have been doing many of the activities you recommend and will use some that I have not been doing. My question is really two parts, but related to the same item. I have scoutedthe teams that we will be playing and many of them are using the double wingoffense. It's actually working well for these teams because of the playersthey have and the team is able to control the ball for most of the game (which is a great defense since the opposing team cannot score without theball). My team uses a 5-4-2 and 6-3-2 defense that I am concerned will NOTcontain this offense. I am thinking of replacing my strong DEs with "weaker"players since the double wing O does not seem to work as well when they haveto go outside the TEs. It's the off-tackle play that is most effective andthe better my DEs are, the bigger the hole for them. I noticed the teams that run the double wing use a 4-6-1 defense against other teams that run the doublewing, but frankly am not that familiar with that type of D at the youthlevel. I would be interested in your thoughts and suggestions on containing thedouble wing offense at the 10 year old level,Thanks,Online Book Buyeris that the offense where one guys in motion on each play?any wayoff tacklei use a single wing playand youve seen it....my playbookthat just kills em off tackleyou double team inside and outsideoh what a killer if it's run right.anywayi suppose from your inflectionyou run your d ends outside the last man on the line and have him rush tailback-deep into the backfieldcommon defensive scheme in football. i use it.i would x stunt my end and tacklethen stack a linebacker in the end tackle gapand play him 4 yards deep.always have a linebacker take a first step to their side. ball-away step away.ball-to step to. Linabackers must stay put on play-action-away looking for cutback.x stunts usually mean the tackle will rake the ends face comming from outsideeye of the tackle. then the end shoots the tackle end gap scrapping off the dtackles tail.the confusion usuuaally causes a blocking meltdown and the linebacker is juststanding their ready to clobber who ever make through the mess

Ihave a question that maybe you can help me with.I'm the D coordinator for a 7-9 youth football team in MD. Our organizationis committed to the 6-2 up the line through 11-13 so that is the D weare to run consistently. My thought is for full end containment turning allplays inside, and running man bump and run coverage with the corners on thewide-outs and wingback. I plan to have both NGs shoot the A gaps and go asdeep in the backfield as possible, tackles shooting the b-gaps and going ayard and a half through the line and reading the play prior to pursuit. On 1st down or 5+ yard to 1st down situation my thought is to have the MLBsline up on the B gaps, and line up on A gaps in short yardage situations. The free safety will read for pass 1st then fly to the ball. I've alsogot a few BC/ CD gaps stunts for tackles and LBs. With a 6-2 base D I can easily slip into a 5-3/ 5-4 for longer yardage situations.
I guess my question is, is this a sound fundamental defense for kids7-9? I'm new to coaching tackle football- though I played through highschool. Everything I read and hear about kids this age is to try and contain thesweeps, stack the box and you'll be ok. I also want to ensure that wecan properly cover passes from this formation- especially in bump and runman coverage.I've got an aggressive but young and light group of kids, and it is our1st year in the league. From what I've seen we have a lot of talent on theO-side of the ball and should score often. I want to do the best I canto limit our mistakes on D and keep us in games. Never having anypractical experience coaching this age has me wondering if I'm doing things right.Could you give me your thoughts on my plans and feel free to make anyreccoskeeping in mind that our base D will be the 6-2.Thanks Coach.

We do not have a set schedule yet and we will be running defense today. Can you send me a suggested schedule and drills to run for my practice today.I could use the help. Also where are players lineman and linebackers to be lined up on a 4-4 defense. Thank you PS I have also purchased your guide

do you practice all day on defense?if so i'd spend the first 45 minutes on tackling drills period.I'd break for a few minutes.then I'd race the whole group in a couple of forties and whittle the winnersdown to 5-6and out of those pick the best tackling fastest kids and put them at cornerand free safety no stong safety in small ballthen i would assemble a line of scrimmage and some linebackersI would show them how to huddle up, call the play and break.i would then go straight to the pursuit drill and burn their butts forsloppy anythingtake time to explain all elements of huddle, break, stance, position, run pursuit for 30-40 minutesafter they get good at one frontmix in another front and change the call each playso at the end of the dayyou will have learned how to tackle and hit HARDand how to huddle break get into position and do it all over again QUICKthe next practice consolidate your timeand add another sectionwhere the line learns rip, swim, bull, blood and guts.the d backs learn how to read tight ends and split outslinebackers learn play to and away responsibilitiesi use spray paint and spry paint offensive positions on the field for theguys to line up on.i also spay paint drills into the grass.

Special teams coaching help

Hi. I am a rookie high school running backs football coach. I was just granted the opportunity to coach special teams; kick off and kick off return. I'm not too savy in this area. Can you send some ideas, x's and o's would be great. Thank you so much.
----------------------------
http://www.oskie.com/kickingholdpuntsnap.htm
basically you have left and right returns. sometimes a middle. and you should be able to adjust will a signal if a kicker puts the ball to the wrong side of your pre kick call left or right.
the page above is all from my college days.
I was on all the special teams and knew them by heart after 3 years of tedious.

i guess the other things might betiming on punt by linemen and upbacks
1000 1 1000 2 1000 and gone.
punter should be 12 yards deep and use two steps only to kick.
try to kick away.
if you run the shotgun you might talk your coach into a sideways kick out of shotgun to make them play defense. We got a lot of good roles this way.
and of course how do you snap.
practice the center with left hand on top of head and right hand on top of ball
he shoots it over and over to practice. they do this at every level

Of course burpees help alot as the player must go to pushups postition each burpee then pull legs up stomach and leep as high as possible with outstreched handds. Push ups, bear crawls, hold a football or helmet in each outstreached are and do small circles for 1-3 minutes. Jumping rope, dumbell curls, dumbell curls, dumbell curls. staright arm sa sa curls. Close grip push ups, bench. Rolls ups for form arms. Get a sticke with a rope pulling a 15 pound wieght on the end. Alterante roll ups with and top forearm rols, then bottom forehand rolls. Fugure need weight but look for 3 sets of 10. up and down equals one.

What is the best way to attack a 50 defense

Quoting Youth Football Coach
Love the site. Learned a lot on practice schedule. Here's my question. The top team in our league (8-9 yr olds) has two great DE, one great tackle and one great LB. Our league mandates a 5-2-2-2. Line must be heads up with DE on outside shoulder of the last man on the line. LB 3 yards deep, Corners 5, safeties 7. Offense can split out max 5 yards. What is the best way to attack that D?
---------------------
off tackle with x blocks and kick out blocks
then throw over the top pop passes
---------------------
I am on the right track. I figured you had to attack those big ends and go after them. I put in the Power I and the cross block with my coaches today. Man this is fun!
What pass plays do you like? I like the spread formation and maybe even take a FB over to the slot with my split and a WB (he is very fast and shifty) maybe a trip formation and just pop a hitch like the Panthers run with Steve Smith. The corners have to be 5-7 yards deep and the end is the only one that can play outside. This should work like crazy against the big teams inside. Do you agree?
---------------------
Usually what you do is attack the spot behind your run.
ie run off tackle off tackle off tackle then thro over the top of the
linebackers. Like a pop pass or maybe a back side end over the top down field.

Squat down and touch hands to ground...
Leap up and thrust hands into air above head as high as one can at apex of jump.
back down to hands touching ground.

Coaching a flag football team for 3-5 year olds, positions, drills, etc at this age

Hi! Not sure if you can help me, but I thought I'd give it a try.

I'm going to be coaching a flag football team for 3-5 year olds in a few
weeks, and I was wondering if you had any advice/tips for me? I don't want to
bog them down with positions, drills, etc at this age. I just want to help
them get comfortable with the ball, and more importantly - to HAVE FUN. Are
there any game type exercises you can recommend I play with them?

Thank you so much for your time!
-------------------------
Find someone who can deep snap first.....
Line up a back on each side of the qb...
Run qick underneath handoff sweeps with a blocker of course...
Run the same motion and have the qb keep and run the other way...
Drag a back side reciever on all the plays. Run quick hitch's with a blocker.
Try to get outside on these plays.
Work on quick automatic pass routes where the ball is thrown before the reciever turns....see who can make reliable catches.
Teach the recievers to catch with their hands not bodies. Teach look the ball in first. run second.
Teach the back proper handoff hand position. Inside hand up Outside down
Teach runners to smack at defenders hands when the defender reaches for flag
Teach blockers how to move constantly with the defenders and to keep their hands on the defender until to ball get by them....

How about that.....
